To begin the process of making Mother of Pearl inlay, first, a hole is drilled in the shell and designed it cut then each piece is hand-sanded against a large grinder that will eliminate the rough edges. Secondly, the pearl design is carefully arranged onto the surface of the wood to be inlaid. In this water-based glue is used to temporarily secure the pieces. Then the design is inlaid on the mother of pearl and sawdust is used as a filler to remove all the cavities created by pearl irregularities. Then in the final process, the Mother of Pearl is used to fill and etched to make the design come to life.
